The Director General of the Citizenship and Leadership Training Centre (CLTC) Michael Fawole says president-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, is a representation of the people’s will.

Fawole said this while congratulating the President-elect. He noted that his victory showed that majority of Nigerians saw him as the illumination on their march to a new nation.

“The Citizenship and Leadership Training Centre sincerely congratulates the president- elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari on his well- deserved victory. Gen. Buhari’s victory after nearly 12 years of consistent struggle and perseverance is a clear testimony that with commitment and dedication, one would achieve his or her dreams. The Centre is therefore looking forward to the sustenance of our contributions towards the building of a secured, united and prosperous nation under the supervision of Gen. Buhari,” Fawole told newsmen on Sunday.

Also eulogising the outgoing president Goodluck Jonathan, Fawole described him as an inspiration to future generations. He urged young people in the continent, especially Nigerian youths to emulate him.

He stated that by willingly accepting the result of the election and congratulating Gen. Muhammadu Buhari even before the official announcement was made, Jonathan saved Nigeria from unforeseen circumstances including violence, deaths and destruction of lives and property.

“Democracy is not a commodity that can be purchased in the market, democracy is a tradition, nurtured over a period by a people which eventually become their way of life,” he said.

“On behalf of the Citizenship and Leadership training Centre, I wish to commend President Goodluck Jonathan for his display of uncommon courage, patriotism and selflessness since he took over the mantle of leadership of the country. The President has made unprecedented contributions towards the evolution of democracy in Nigeria”,he said.

“We recall that the President had conducted national elections that were adjudged free and fair, first in 2011 and later in some isolated states; and now the 2015 elections which has become a historic event in the country. From the Presidential, through the National Assembly and later the State elections, Jonathan allowed and encouraged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to be truly independent.”

“Again, we note that this same President had signed into law the Freedom of Information Bill which some of his predecessors chose to shy away from. He had ensured that the judiciary was independent from his first day in office as president and up till today, in addition to ensuring that there is no political prisoner in the land. These are a few of the many policies and programmes that have combined to foist Jonathan’s name on the world map,” Fawole stated.

“The Centre wishes to recall also, the tension that enveloped our dear nation following the build-up to the 2015 general election. This is in addition to the various permutations and predictions of large-scale crisis and even possible disintegration of Nigeria by some local and international political analysts.”

“It is therefore to the credit of President Jonathan that the predicted doomsday was averted and that Nigeria has remained a united and peaceful nation after the presidential election. This singular act of the President has helped to restore the confidence of Nigerians on their country as well as engendered respect for the nation in the international community.

“The CLTC therefore wishes to recommend that young Nigerians and indeed Africans aspiring to become leaders in their countries, local communities, religious and other groups should make deliberate efforts to study the life of President Goodluck Jonathan and adopt him as their personal role models and inspiration. The President’s humility, selflessness, statesmanship as well as his refusal to engage in do-or-die politics (which has hindered the growth of democracy and development in the continent) are true attributes of great leaders.”
