national_orientation_agency_noa_mike_omeri_A National Peace Policy is one of the documents that will be in President Goodluck Jonathan’s hand over to the President-elect, Maj. Gen. Mohammadu Buhari (retd.) on May 29, 2015 Director General of the National Orientation Agency, Mr. Mike Omeri, has said.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, Omeri said the National Peace Policy is the brainchild of stakeholder agencies – the National Institute for Conflict Resolution, NOA, the National Stabilisation Reconstruction Programme of the British Council and partner NGOs.

Omeri said the draft strategy framework for managing conflicts and building peace would soon be submitted to the Federal Executive Council for ratification.

According to him, the successful handling of the fears surrounding the general election and the structures put in place during the period, need to be institutionalized to serve as a blueprint for peace building in Nigeria.

The draft peace policy, which is expected to be ratified by the FEC before the handover date, is part of the documents which the incoming government will inherit from the Jonathan government.

Omeri added that details of the draft will be harmonised at a stakeholders’ forum on Tuesday with the Civil Society Legislative Action Committee leading the third sector input into the final document.

He pointed out that government was desirous of putting in place an enduring framework for managing conflict situations especially in a diverse society such as Nigeria.
