Mourinho Says Chelsea Had Man Utd in Their Pockets

Jose Mourinho claims his Chelsea side had Manchester United players in their “pockets” during Saturday’s closely contested encounter at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues edged closer to a fourth Premier League title, as Eden Hazard netted the match-winning goal in the first half to help them widen their gap at the top of the standings.

United dominated possession and registered more attempts than their table-topping opponents, but failed to take their chances. The Red Devils were without a host of defenders, while striker Wayne Rooney was deployed to a holding midfield role.

However, Mourinho seems to suggest that Chelsea were never going to settle for less against a rival team.

“We need our points but if they come against teams in second or in third it helps us,” the Portuguese boss, 52, told BBC Sport.

“Today we won three points and our direct opponent lost three points. We are focused on us, we have six matches to play and we need eight points.

“The game was exactly the game we want. The only thing we couldn’t do was to kill the game with a second goal. We were able to make their important players disappear. Nobody saw them. They were in our pockets.”

The win means Chelsea have surged ten points clear of title rivals Arsenal; both sides having played 32 matches ahead of the former’s trip across London to the Emirates stadium on 26 April.

“Six games to play, three at home three away. Every game is difficult, every team needs points. But our situation is very good,” Mourinho added.
