Five-time US Open champion Roger Federer held his grounds against Sam Groth to move into the last 32, as South Africa’s Kevin Anderson, Croatia’s Marin Cilic and Frenchman Gael Monfils advanced in Flushing Meadows on Friday.
There were upsets in the women’s singles draw after Croatian qualifier Mirjana Lucic-Baroni’s stunning win over No. 2 seed, Simona Halep and rising star Belinda Benicic’s dismissal of sixth seed Angelique Kerber.
And though it may not have been an upset in terms of seeding, 13th seed Sara Errani held her nerves to earn her first win in four meetings against America’s Venus Williams.

Roger Federer (Swi) (2) beat Sam Groth (Aus) 6-4 6-4 6-4
Number 104 Groth came up against his first top ten opponent in no other than 17-time Grand Slam champion Federer and, as you would expect could force his way through.
After winning his first Grand Slam match in the first round against Albert Ramos-Vinolas, the Australian was had no more fuel in his thank to fend off a 6-4 6-4 6-4 defeat by the Swiss.
Federer fired nine aces, won 84 per cent of first serve points and broke serve in five of 11 openings.
“I thought I did pretty well from the start, I created quite a few opportunities. I’m really happy how I played on the return,” said Federer.
“I could maybe have done a bit better on my serve but I thought it was an exciting match. I thought Sam played well and it was tough until the end. He’s got unbelievable power. My arm’s still shaking a little bit.”
The 33-year-old Basel native will face Marcel Granollers in the third round after the unseeded Spaniard outlasted big-serving Ivo Karlovic 7-6 (6) 6-7 (3) 7-6 (5) 3-6 6-4 in three hous and 51 minutes.
Sharapova (Rus) (5) beat Lisicki (Ger) (26) 6-2 6-4

Sharapova avoided joining the upset band wagon on Day 5 with a composed 6-2 6-4 win over Germany’s Lisicki to reach the round of 16.
After falling behind 3-1 in the second set of the 3rd round clash- and facing a point for 4-1- the No. 5 seed regrouped to close out the contest in straight sets.
“She was a really tough opponent, a very aggressive big server. I just tried to concentrate on my return,” said Sharapova.
“I wasn’t serving as well as I wanted to. In the end it was a few points. I was happy I was able to break her.”
The French Open champion will face No. 10 seed Caroline Wozniacki, who earlier in the day sealed a 6-3, 6-2 win over Andrea Petkovic in the next round.
Sara Errani (Ita) (13) beat Venus Williams (USA) (19) 6-0 0-6 7-6 (5)
Errani defied the odds to eliminate two-time champion Williams 6-0 0-6 7-6 (5) in the third round.
The Italian rallied from 5-3 down in the third set to get her first win in four meetings against the American.
“I really just have to emphasise that I think she played really well,” said Williams. “I think she just played one of the best matches of her life . You know, that’s pretty much what I can say.”
Belinda Bencic (Swi) beat Angelique Kerber (Ger) (6) 6-1 7-5
Teenager Bencic recorded her first win over a top ten on Friday, seeing off Kerber to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time.
Kerber, a former US Open semi-finalist seeded sixth this year, was bidding to reach the round of 16 in Flushing Meadows for the fourth straight year.
But she came up against huge resistance from her 17-year-old opponent, who immediately raced into a 3-0 lead to finish off a one-sided first set.
The German appeared ready to tie the match when she went up 5-2 in the second set and, even had three set points at 5-3, 40-0. But Bencic fought all the way back to take the set and the match 6-1 7-5.
Up next is a first clash with No. 9 seed Jelena Jankovic, who cruised 6-1 6-0 past Johanna Larsson.

Monfils recorded his 15th match win at Flushing Meadows in Friday’s 7-5 6-3 6-2 win against Gonzalez.
The 2010 quarter-finalist hit 45 winners and was faulty of two fewer unforced errors to win in two hours and seven minutes .
Up next is a round of 32 clash with countryman Richard Gasquet- semi-finalist last year. Gasquet beat Paolo Lorenzi 7-6 (4) 6-3 6-3 in two hours and 19 minutes.
Mirjana Lucic-Baroni (Cro) beat Simona Halep (Rom) 7-6 (6) 6-2
World number 121 Lucic-Bencic pulled off a surprise 7-6 (6) 6-2 win over No. 2-ranked Halep to return to the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time since 1999.
After reaching the quarter-finals at the Australian Open, final and the Roland Garros and semi-finals at Wimbledon, it all ended in disappointment for Halep, who could have qualified for the WTA Finals in Singapore by making the semis in New York.
But for Croatian qualifier, the win over the second seed was the biggest of her career, the other been a Top 5 win- against Monica Seles, then-ranked No. 4 in the world en route to the semi-finals of Wimbledon in 1999- the only time she had been to the second week of a Grand Slam.
Caroline Wozniacki (Den) (10) beat Andrea Petkovic (Ger) (18) 6-3 6-2
Kevin Anderson (RSA) (18) beat Jerzy Janowicz 6-7 (8) 6-2 6-1 6-3
Anderson equaled his best US Open run in the win over Janowicz- a third round berth in 2010, when he lost Gasquet.
The South African sets up Marin Cilic in the third round, after the No. 14 seed Croatian and two-time quarter-finalist came through a 7-6 (2) 6-2 6-4 win over qualifier Illya Marchenko.
