Angel Di Maria has completed his move to Manchester United for a British record fee of £59.7 million.
“Angel joins on a five-year contract,” the club said in a statement.
The winger who had turned down the option of remaining with Spanish giants Real Madrid expressed delight at his move to Old Trafford where he is expected to help the team’s resurgence after last season bismal display.
“I am absolutely delighted to be joining Manchester United,” said Di Maria.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in Spain and there were a lot of clubs interested in me, but United is the only club that I would have left Real Madrid for,” said the 26-year-old Argentine.
He was full of praise for Manager Louis van Gaal, whom he called “a fantastic coach with a proven track record of success.”
With the move shrouded in secrecy by the club over the past few days now done, Di Maria expressed readiness to help the team’s vision.
“I now just cannot wait to get started.”
Van Gaal, who has refused comments on the transfer while negotiations lasted also expressed delight at Di Maria’s arrival.
Extolling the qualities of the former Benfica star, the manager said “There is no doubting his immense natural talent.
“He is a tremendously fast and incisive left-footed player who puts fear into the most accomplished defence.
“His dribbling skills and his ability to take on and beat opponents are a joy to watch. He is an excellent addition to the team.”
