Opinion: Alexis Sanchez should be deployed in the central berth.

Sanchez

Alexis Sanchez should spearhead the Gunners attack over the lazy Olivier Giroud.

The demeanor of the Emirates cup didn’t matter much. The thirst for Silverware was already squashed last season when they came from 2 goals down to beat a hapless Hull city side.

The bitter exit of Robin Vanpersie, who scored 30 goals in the 2011-2012 season, left the fans frustrated on the replacement to replicate his immense works.

On came Giroud. He has since fitted into the Arsenal system, and scored a fair number of goals in the last two seasons, but for a team interested in English Premier League and Uefa Champions League glory, with a relatively quality squad, a player like Giroud leading the attack is simply having a laugh.

Alexis Sanchez joined the Emirates outfit for a fee around £31.8 million, and yesterday in the Emirates cup clash against Monaco, made his debut start on the right flank of a trio attack.

The mundane nature of the event didn’t produce much excitement from both teams.

However, the stagnant French statue leading the Gunners strike force displayed his usual trademarks with poor positioning, redundant flicks; that caused confusion in the final third. At some point, Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey and Cazorla were seen stretching their limits by driving all alone into the box with motive to score or find a more determined Sanchez, who at some point was isolated on the right, due to a solid Monaco defense.

When the appalling Olivier Giroud was eventually withdrawn in the second half, Alexis Sanchez who scored 21 goals and provided 15 assists in all competitions for Barcelona last season, moved into the central position.

His prowess was subsequently seen. He cajoled; causing the opponent’s defense problems with his pace and body strength, not forgetting his trickery that brought life into a dull affair.

He had a big chance to open his account but couldn’t connect properly with the ball from 12 yards, and it went agonizingly wide.

He was withdrawn in the 76 minutes, but nonetheless a glimpse of his showings as the main striker says it all.

If Arsene Wenger is truly interested in adding another trophy to his cabinet, Sanchez should be given the main striker berth.
