Gbolahan Salami scored his 15th goal of the Glo Premier League season against Abia Warriors to sit atop the goalscorers’ chart.
Salami maintained his superb goal-scoring form to shoot Warri Wolves up the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) standing, after his late strike earned a 1-0 win over Abia Warriors in a rescheduled fixture on Monday morning.
The Match Day 29 fixture was postponed on Sunday owing to a torrential rain at the Warri City Stadium.
The hosts dominated most of the proceeding and Joseph Osadiaye was gutted not to have tapped home from close range with the goal at his mercy after a rebound from Abia goalkeeper John Gaadi few minutes past the hour mark.
Minutes of sustained pressure finally paid off for the ‘Seasiders’ in the 84th minute, when Michael Egbeta went tumbling in the Warriors’ box, leading to a penalty call by referee Opeyemi Amao.
Salami, 23, stepped up to send a high ball into the back of the net straight through the middle.
The strike saw the Super Eagles striker assume leadership in the race for the 2013-14 Glo Premier League golden boot after Rangers’ 44th minute winner wrongly credited to Osaguona Ighodalo was later corrected on Saturday.
Wolves now have 46 points from 29 matches, four points shy of leaders Kano Pillars. Abia Warriors are 9th with 41 points.
