Arsene Wenger has said Arsenal will try to boost its squad with new signing over the course of the winter transfer window, if right “opportunities” open up.
The Gunners have been linked with some big name defenders and midfielders, but the 65-year-old says the club will not get involved in transfers for just the sake of it.
“There is a need there but the right opportunity has to come up. To buy (just) to buy is not what we want to do, but if the right opportunity comes up, we will do it,” Wenger said in his pre-match press conference ahead of the trip to Southampton.
“If you look at the number of games some players played, and the injuries we have with Wilshere, Ramsey and Arteta, we are a bit short at the moment in midfield.”
The manager has dismissed speculations linking German forward Lukas Podolski with a move to Inter Milan, but says his counterpart Yaya Sanogo could embark on a loan switch away from London.
“I hope (Podolski will stay). (The) Inter Milan (reports) are not serious. They talk, it is only talk,” Wenger stressed.
“Offensively we have many options (when everyone is fit), too many to keep everyone involved with the right number of games, that is for sure.
“I don’t really doubt (loan deals) in some positions where players need experience. That’s not the case for Podolski but players who need practice because they’re at a very young age like Sanogo, it is not impossible.”
Arsenal have taken ten points from their last four Premier League matches and heads into their New Year’s Day’s trip to Southampton brewing in confidence following a 2-1 win at West Ham on Sunday.
The win made the Emirates Stadium side the only winning team on the final Match Day of 2014 and the French boss has urged his team to capitalise on any weakness by teams ahead of them in the table.
“We will fight to be as close as possible [to the top],” he said. “We are not in a mode of calculating, we are in a mode of ‘let’s go to the next game and win it’.
“You give your best and if there is a weakness in front of you, you want to take advantage of it. I don’t know if there will be any weakness in front of us, but what I know is that we can give our best until the end of the season to have a chance to do it.
“I believe that there is a deficit between the potential we have shown and the number of points we have. That’s what we want to get right. I feel we were very, very unlucky with the injuries we got. With the number of injuries we’ve had, we have survived quite well.
“But I believe that hopefully in the second part of the season, we’ll have more stability, especially defensively, to be more consistent.”
