EPL Update: United Beat Villa After Fans Protest

Wayne Rooney grabbed a brace in Manchester United’s 3-1 win over Aston Villa as record signing Juan Mata opened his Old Trafford account after a fly-by protest by fans calling for manager David Moyes to be sacked.

A plane carrying an anti- Moyes banner was booed by some home fans as it flew over Old Trafford within two minutes of kick-off.

The aerial message organised by disgruntled United fans read “Wrong One – Moyes Out”.

The hosts then went behind, thanks to an Ashley Westwood’s curling free-kick, which scaled the United wall and beyond a diving David De Gea in the 13th minute.

Despite going down again, United fans kept singing Moyes’ name and they were reward soon after.

Wayne Rooney leveled matters seven minutes later, clinically steering Shinji Kagawa’s cross into the corner of the net.

He then scored from the penalty spot after Leandro Bacuna fouled Juan Mata.

Mata doubled United’s lead moments before the hour mark, firing home his first goal since joining United for £37m in January from a Marouane Fellaini pass.

Hernandez converted Adnan Januzaj’s inviting cross to make it 4-1 in stoppage time.

United entertain Bayern Munich on Tuesday in a European Champions League quarter-finals first-leg tie and Moyes was indeed glad his side had responded to criticism following last Tuesday’s derby loss.

The Scot left the club ground amidst wide applause from supporters as the disgruntled fans’ protest met no admiration on the part of the faithful.
