The Defence headquarters (DHQ) yesterday declared that the troops are battle ready to defend Maiduguri, following fears expressed by Borno elders that the city had been surrounded by Boko Hara insurgents.
According to the DHQ, the alarm by the elders, that the terrorists have mobilised to invade the Borno State capital, was meant to cause panic and unsettle the nation.
However, all members of the armed forces deployed to the North East have been put on high alert and are ready for immediate action should the need arise, the military said.
DHQ also disclosed that fighting was still ongoing in Bama, Gwoza, Gamboru and other parts of the North East to reclaim the communities, adding that the situation in these areas were being stabilised.
The Nigerian Air force fighter jets and Helicopter gunships were also said to be on a 24 hours standby for airlift and attack operations at the signal to take off.
The Defence headquarters further disclosed that highly coordinated air and land operations are ongoing and that the efforts are yielding impressive results in the overall move to rid the area of terrorists.
“Situation in Mubi, Michika, Bazza, Gulak, Gwoza, Bama, Gamboru Ngala and other parts of the North East is being stabilized. Citizens are nevertheless enjoined to remain vigilant as they go about their lawful business as highly coordinated air and land operations are ongoing. The efforts are yielding impressive results in the overall move to rid area of terrorists,” the DHQ said.
