SSS, Police Argue Over Prosecution Of Nyanya Bombing Suspect

While Nigerians who lost their loved ones in the Nyanya bomb blast of April 14 will be waiting to see what will become of Aminu Ogwuche, the suspected mastermind of the bombing, the Police and the Department of State Service (DSS) are busy claiming and a counter-claiming in court, a development that may stall the trial of the terror suspect.

It must have been annoying for anyone who wanted Oguche’s trial to end as soon as possible, and hear the judge pass the guilty verdict on Friday at the Federal High Court, as both the Police and the SSS laid claim to authority to prosecute the bomb suspect.

The lawyer representing the DSS, Cliff Osagie had urged the police to withdraw the initial charges filed against the accused to enable the DSS to complete its investigation on the matter. Police counsel, DSP Oloye Torugbene, however insisted that nothing of such would happen except he was instructed otherwise by police authorities.

The Nigeria Police had filed charges before the court in preparatory to the Federal Government’s application for Ogwuche’s extradition from Sudan, where he allegedly escaped to after the incident. But the suspect upon arrival in Nigeria, was detained by the DSS.

With the matter up for hearing before Justice Adeniyi Ademola on Friday, the police had to appear in court without the suspect as he remained in DSS custody.

It is however expected that the two security agencies will resolve the matter between themselves and trial will continue as soon as possible.
