Two women by the name of Monifa Sanford, 22, and Zakieya Avery, 29, were charged with stabbing Zakieya’s four kids in her Germantown house on the 17th of January. They murdered Zakieya’s four children because they felt like the kids were possessed by demons.
They two women referred to themselves as “Demonic Assassins,” according to the local police department.
Zakieya Avery’s 18-month-old son and 2-year-old daughter died from the brutal attack. Her 8-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter thankfully survived.
“She was in a delusional context when these allegations occurred,” David Felsen, Sanford’s attorney, told the court on Friday.
Prosecutors assigned to this case challenged the psychiatrist’s point-of-view, which will most likely place Monifa Sandord in a mental hospital rather than jail time.
According to prosecutors, Zakieya Avery attempted to snap 18-month-old Norell’s neck and choked him. She wanted to kill the child so bad, she proceeded to have Sanford get her a butcher’s knife from the kitchen drawer.
After she murdered the young boy, both women believed that demonic spirits were inside each of the children. These women were the actual demons. They fatally stabbed 2-year-old Zyana, 5-year-old Taniya, and 8-year-old Martello.
Both women were each charged with two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder.
Zakieya Avery went through a psychological evaluation, but the results of her test have not been made public.
In the state of Maryland, a successful insanity defense results in a finding of “not criminally responsible,” the Washington Post reported.
