Klopp Will Not Leave Bottom-Placed Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp says he will not quit the club but takes “full responsibility” for his side’s downward plunge in the Bundesliga table.

Dortmund, who finished second behind Bayern Munich last season, are bottom after 13 rounds of matches in the current campaign following a 2-0 defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday.

“I understand that journalists have those thoughts, but there is no such trend.” Klopp, 47, was quoted by kicker.de as telling Sky Sports when quizzed on quitting.

“I won’t stand in the way, but I cannot go before there is a better solution, the responsibility is great and I can accept it.”

It has been a season of contrasting fortunes for the ‘Black and Yellows’, who cruised into the Uefa Champions League knockout stage by winning four straight matches in Group D.

The defeat by Frankfurt was their eighth in the ongoing league season- their worst start to a German top-flight season.

“If it is only about luck and a change of coach can bring that, you only have to call me up and I will step aside,” Klopp said.

“But it is not so simple. As long as nobody comes and says to me, ‘we have someone who does it better’, then I cannot go.”

Frankfurt skipper and the Bundesliga’s top scorer so far, Alexander Meier, opened scoring early with his eighth goal of the campaign.

Dortmund conceded a second goal via a defensive mix-up as Matthias Ginter miss-timed a header, only for striker Haris Seferovic to outran goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller and tap in.

Klopp added on the club’s website: “It belongs in our cabinet of curiosities.”

Dortmund now have 11 points from 13 matches and are bottom of the table after Werder Bremen’s win over Paderborn and Stuttgart’s success at Freiburg.
