It’s been proven time and time again that your thoughts have the power to shape your reality.
Even without reading scientific journals or learning from a yogi, you can probably think back and remember times in your life when positive thinking led to amazing things.
Too often, however, we tell ourselves lies and focus on the negatives. You are your own worst critic, right?
Imagine how your whole world could change if you started to be conscious of your thoughts.
When I started to pay attention to my own internal musings, I was shocked to see how often I criticized myself and focused on the worst-possible scenarios. I damaged my self-esteem without even realizing it.
Including positive affirmations in your daily routine is a simple, healthy step to become your best self and ditch negativity. Here are five truths we should all be telling ourselves daily:
1. I am worthy.
It’s a classic. How often do you feel unworthy of something? We all have had those moments. I often question whether or not I deserve all the good things in my life, but I have to remember to stop myself.
Of course I’m worthy, and so are you. Do not sell yourself short. It’s not a matter of becoming worthy, but recognizing you already are.
2. I am grateful.
Oprah is big on this one. She starts every day by saying, “thank you.” When you’re appreciative of the things you have, there is no room to worry about the things you don’t have.
Constantly wanting more prevents you from seeing the good surrounding you in this moment. If it helps, you can also list off a few things you’re grateful for.
Even seemingly small treasures — your health, the roof over your head, the shoes on your feet — are incredible gifts.
What happened to you today that you can feel grateful for? Did a friend make you smile, did you make it to class on time, is the sun shining?
Although I hate to be the bearer of bad news, you will probably never have everything in the world you possibly want, so why not choose to be grateful for what already exists?
3. Today is mine for the taking.
It sounds simple, but it’s true. Every single day is a new opportunity. All too often, we forget about how special each day is until some kind of tragedy strikes.
This is your day; you can do anything with it. How exciting is that? The only limitations are ones you place on yourself. Do I hear someone saying “carpe diem?”
4. I forgive myself.
Confession: I hold more grudges against myself than any of my ex-boyfriends ever have. I still beat myself up over mistakes I made years ago, big and small.
Forgiving yourself can be really, really hard. That’s also why it’s so important. Stress and anger can increase your risk for a list of ailments, including cancer and heart disease.
When you learn to forgive yourself, a huge weight can lift off your shoulders, which benefits both your mind and your body. Repeat this affirmation enough, and before you know it, it will become part of your reality.
5. I choose to be hopeful.
It is always too early to give up. On days when it’s hard to be positive, take a breath and choose hope. How you approach obstacles is just that: a choice. Your choice!
Moving forward with a positive mindset will make all the difference. Bonus: hope has also been linked improvements in overall health, including longer lifespans and lower levels of depression.
