Zhang Yiyi, one of China’s most accomplished writers has allegedly spent a whopping $225,000 on plastic surgery to make himself look like William Shakespeare. Read more from Scoop:

News of Zhang’s intentions broke out in 2011, when he announced he would be using the royalties from one of his books on a series of cosmetic procedures that would make him resemble the English playwright. Apparently, he felt they shared a number of similarities already, like the fact that they both came from poor families but managed to become successful writers, so he decided physical similarities were the next logical step.

According to recent reports, the devoted superfan had a total of 10 operations – including eye reconstruction, eyelid surgery, nose surgery and a face tuck – over the span of several months. He had work done on his nose, eyes, and lips, but judging by a photo doing the rounds online these days, the result wasn’t exactly a success.

He looks no more like Shakespeare than any other Chinese man I’ve ever seen, but as long as he’s happy… “Life is a process of striving to become a better person. I think the surgeries are worth the money,” Zhang Yiyi was quoted as saying.
