Bayern Munich defender David Alaba is likely to miss the rest of the season after tearing ligaments in his left knee.
The 22-year-old Austrian sustained the injury during Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw with Bosnia-Hercegovina.
After subsequent scans, he will require a seven-week break before being able to return back to full training. It means the full-back could return for the Bavarians’ last Bundesliga fixture and may also return for a prospective DFB-Pokal or UEFA Champions League final appearance, should the German champions advance that far.
Alaba will now wear a plaster cast for two weeks before having a plate inserted in his knee.
“Of course I’m deeply sad,” Alaba told Bayern’s website. “But I have a big goal in my eyes and I want to be back for the end of the season.”I’m going to get a good rest now and then give it my all in rehabilitation.”
A similar injury in his right knee in November ruled him out of the latter part of the first half of the season.
