The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Returning Officer for the governorship election in Imo State, Prof Ibidapo Obe has declared the results of Imo state governorship election inconclusive.
The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Rochas Okorocha, garnered 385,671 votes, while the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Emeka Ihedioha had 306,142 votes. 144,715 votes were cancelled. With the margin, 79,529, less than the number of cancelled votes, INEC had to declare the election inconclusive.
Obe said a new date would be announced for a supplementary election in the wards where election was cancelled, spread across several local government areas of the state.
The verdict of INEC is a repeat of what happened in 2011. The commission declared the poll inconclusive because election did not hold in Ohaji/Egbema, Mbatioli, Ngor-Okpala and Oguta Local Government Areas as well as in Orji Ward in Owerri North Local Government Areas.
