Mark swears-in Niger-East Senator, David Umoru

david umarSenate President, David Mark on Tuesday swore-in the Senator for Niger East Senatorial District, Barr. David Umoru.

Senator Umoru’s swearing-in came on the heels of the Appeal Court’s judgment that sacked the former occupant of the seat, Senator Shem Nuhu Zagbayi, who was elected in a bye-election after the death of Senator Dahiru Kuta.

Although, Senator Umoru was supposed to have been sworn-in before now, the recess by the senate to enable members focus on the general elections contributed to the delay.

Incidentally, Umoru, who has less than two months to stay before the expiration of the current senate, won the March 28 senatorial election on the platform of All Progressives Congress, APC.

He defeated incumbent Governor Muazu Babangida, who vied for the Niger East seat on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

The 8th senate is expected to commence, June 2, 2015 with the APC set to assume majority control of the red chamber.
