Podolski Ruled Out of Algeria Clash

Germany forward Lukas Podolski is ruled out of today’s round of 16 match against Algeria with a thigh injury.

The Arsenal star sustained the injury in Germany’s 1-0 win over the USA on Thursday- their final group game of the tournament.

Subsequent scan revealed a small tear in his thigh, which requires the 29-year-old to take a couple of days’ rest.

“Lukas must rest for two or three days, but should we progress in the tournament it won’t be a problem for him to play,” said Germany coach Joachim Low.

Bayern Munich’s Mario Gotze is expected to take Podolski’s place for the game against the ‘Desert Foxes’ in Porto Alegre.

Germany’s right-back Jerome Boateng also missed training on Saturday with a knee irritation, but Low said it will be “no problem” for Ghanaian-born defender.
