Welbeck May Feature Against Liverpool, Says Wenger

Danny Wellbeck could make a return against Liverpool on Saturday, but Jack Wilshere is not likely to feature in the Premier League encounter, manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed.

The striker suffered a knee injury during England’s 4-0 win over Lithuania in a Uefa Euro 2016 qualification match last week.

“Welbeck has a slight knee injury. He has a little chance,” Wenger said in his pre-match media conference at the club’s Colney facility. “He’s an important player who scores goals and contributes to the team. Technically he has matured.”

Wilshere, who has not featured for the Gunners since undergoing ankle surgery in November, is unlikely to feature against the Reds. The English midfielder is back in first-team training but the game against Liverpool has come too thick and fast.

Wenger also disclosed that the likes of Mikel Arteta, Mathieu Debuchy, who was involved in a closed door practice match at the weekend, and Abou Diaby are unavailable.

On Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, the 65-year-old added: “Oxlade-Chamberlain is back in training as well but won’t be available.”
