If You Think Chelsea Can’t Play; You Are Jealous, Says Schuerrle

Chelsea forward Andre Schuerrle believes critics of Chelsea’s defensive approach in last weekend’s win over Premier League leaders Liverpool are simply jealous.

Portuguese boss Jose Mourinho was accused of “parking two buses” by Liverpool counterpart Brendan Rodgers in Sunday’s 2-0 win at Anfield.

The ‘Blues’ again enjoyed little possession and continuously fell back deep inside their own half, while Liverpool pressed forward but lacked the killer instinct with which they would have nailed the match.

“Winning is what matters,” Schuerrle said ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League semi-final second leg tie with La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid at Stamford Bridge. “It’s the most important thing.

The West London club frustrated their Spanish opponents with similar tactics last week, as the midfield duo of Franck Lampard and John Obi Mikel were employed deep inside the defence, in the absence of playmaker Eden Hazard.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is expected to name the 23-year-old German player, who missed last week’s first leg in Madrid, for the must win home clash with Atletico.

“You can play perfect football, have lots of one-touch stuff, and lose. But that’s not what you want- you want to win. There’s no point playing well and losing if our plan is to win playing this way, and we win, then it is perfect,” Schuerrle added.

“If people look at us and say ‘Chelsea can’t play’, even when we win, it’s juct because they are jealous.”

Schuerrle joined the London club from Bayer Leverkusen last year for a reported fee of £18m.
