Injured Spurs Winger, Townsend, Ruled Out of World Cup

Tottenham Hotspur winger Andros Townsend looks set to miss out on the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil due to an ankle injury.


The 22-year-old is set to undergo surgery on his damaged ankle ligament and will be sidelined for at least 10 weeks.


Townsend left the Liberty Stadium wearing a protective boot, after coming on in the closing 12 minutes of Spurs 1-0 win over Stokes.


A Spurs statement read: “Following further examination and consultation, Andros Townsend is to undergo surgery on his left ankle on Thursday (tomorrow)…

“The injury is likely to sideline the young winger for up to 10 weeks.”


Townsend made an impressive England debut in October, scoring against Montenegro.


He also played a key role in beating Poland to secure qualification for the World Cup in Brazil, which is just 44 days away.


Townsend has made 33 appearances this season but has not started a Premier League match since the 1-0 defeat to Arsenal in March.
