Wimbledon Announces Prize Money Increase for 2014

Wimbledon announces a £25m total prize money increase for this year’s championships – a 10.8% increase over 2013.


Winners of the singles event will receive £1.76m each in 2014, which amounts to a 10% increase from the £1.6m won by Andy Murray and Marion Bartoli last year. Runner-ups will each cart home the sum of £880,000.


The All England Club says it has continued rewarding players, who lose in the qualifying or the early rounds of the championships, by confirming an “over 100%” increase in monetary rewards to this players over three years period.

“At the heart of the increase is a wish by the Club to continue to build on the work of the last two years targeting the increases to the side of the draw which it was felt needed it most – those players who lose in the early rounds or in qualifying,” read a statement by the organizers of the third Grand Slam of the year.


Prize money for players knocked out in the first three rounds and qualification stages of the championships has been increased by 12.5%, with each first, second and third round losers set to earn the sum of £27,000, £43,000 and £71,000 respectively.


The 2014 Championships will be played on 17 courts, as courts 14 and 15 are currently been remodeled “to provide accommodation for Ball Boys and Ball Girls, photographers and for an expanded 24-hour media restaurant from 2015”. Court No. 3 “will have an extra 198 unreserved seats offering improved value to spectators with Grounds Passes”.


The championships begins on Monday 23 June through Sunday 6 July.
