Bayern Ease Past Cologne Open Up 11-Point Lead

FC Bayern opened up an 11 point lead at the summit of the German Bundesliga with a comfortable 4-1 home win over FC Cologne on Friday.

Bastian Schweinsteiger’s early header placed the champions in the lead and Franck Ribery doubled the advantage moments later.

Anthony Ujah offered the ‘Billy Goats’ a glimmer of hope just before the break, but Arjen Robben and Robert Lewandowski were on target in the second half to close out a fourth straight league win for the Bavarians.

A befitting birthday present it was for Bayern on its 115th founding anniversary. The Allianz Arena hosts pushed forward for an early goal and Ujah was lucky to find his attempted clearance spilled for a corner.

Schweinsteiger placed Bayern ahead from Robben’s corner from the left to crank the “115 years FCB” chants blaring out from the south terrace up.

Ribery then cut in from the left and drilled his low shot into the bottom corner to double the lead for Pep Guardiola’s side.

With the half-time break fast approaching, Bayern continued to dominate but at a relatively slower speed to as it had been early on. Ujah continued to trouble the German leaders’ defence and succeeded in grabbing a much needed goal before the break, heading in at the far post from Matthias Lehman’s inch-perfect cross.

The goal- Ujah’s eighth of the season- placed the visitors on the front foot early into the second half, with the Nigeria international forcing a save off Manuel Neuer after a swift counter attack.

Robben’s decision in the final third at the other end cost Bayern a third goal as the Netherlands star sought for an assist instead of shooting, after running through on goal.

The winger made amend for his earlier miss, when he thumped in Ribery’s cross at the back post.

Lewandowski sealed a deserved win for Bayern 15 minutes from time, when he controlled the ball over the line with his chest from a Robben assist.
