The Director of Finance, Jonathan/Sambo Presidential Campaign Committee, Senator Nenadi Usman, Friday expressed concern that many voters would be disenfranchised if the card reader is used during the forthcoming general elections.
According to Usman, the card reader could take up to 60 seconds to be done with one voter thereby causing delay in accrediting other voters.
She voiced her concerns shortly after an outreach programme organised by the campaign organisation where materials were distributed to over 300 support groups in Kaduna.
According to the senator, the card reader does not work fast enough to accredit many eligible voters.
She said: “I think the card reader is a good thing but the only disadvantage is that many people are going to be disenfranchised on the day of elections because the card reader from what I saw at the demonstration in the Senate, it cannot possibly accredit more than one person per minute.
“So it has been programmed that on that day it is going to accredit for five hours. And if it is going to accredit one person per minute, it means in one hour, it will accredit 60 people, which will translate to accreditation of 300 people in five hours.
“So, if a polling unit has more than 300 people I don’t see more than 300 people getting accreditation done. So, that is just the issue”.
