Ujah ‘Proud’ Scoring Past World Best Goalkeeper Neuer

FC Cologne striker Anthony Ujah says “it is a great feeling” scoring against FC Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

The Nigeria international was a pain in Bayern defenders’ neck during Friday night’s 4-1 defeat at the Allianz Arena and, even got on the scoresheet; a feat only a handful of players have managed to achieve this season.

“Scoring against Manuel Neuer is something any striker would be proud of at the moment, and I’m very proud of it and I hope it will give me confidence to continue helping my team to stay in the league,” Ujah told bundesliga.com. “It was a really, really, really proud moment that I will cherish for the rest of my life.”

The 24-year-old has scored 8 out of Cologne’s 21 goals this season as the ‘Billy Goats’ aim to avoid the drop and presently sits three points above the relegation play-off zone.

His deft footwork and unpredictability in front of joyous Bayern fans, celebrating the Bundesliga champions’ 115th founding anniversary, at the south terrace, kept the likes of Jerome Boateng, Holger Badstuber and homeboy Schweinsteiger on their guard.

And he managed to dull the Bavarians’ party shortly before the break when he headed in at the far post from an inch-perfect Matthias Lehman delivery from the right.

Ujah almost restored parity after the break, but Neuer dived to his left to save his goalwards effort following a quick counter-attack.

“I thought it was almost in, but he showed why he’s the best and I should be proud of being there at the right moment because that’s one of the things I’m trying to work on to improve,” he noted.

“I know it didn’t go in, but it’s something I can build on and continue to fight.”

Attention now shifts to the DFB Cup round of 16 on Tuesday, as Ujah hopes to add to his two goals at SC Freiburg’s Dreisamstadion.

“There have been surprises right from the first round so we will go there and try to go through to the next round,” he said.

“The cup is very important to our fans and we want to give them something to cheer about.”
