A male toddler has been abandoned at a newspaper depot in Effurun, Delta State, a distributor, yesterday told Vanguard.
“The girl who sells tickets to people saw the boy left unclad in dirty water outside. The woman who owns one of the shops outside then bought clothes for him and Mr. Nation bought this Lucozade for him,” said Esther Okafor.
According to the Secretary of the Newspaper Distributors’ Union, Effurun, Akpaitam Aniekan, the union was yet to comprehend the development, saying no one really saw when the child was dropped within their premises.
Child abandonment is rampant due to Poverty and teenage pregnancies. People in cultures with poor social welfare systems who are not financially capable of taking care of a child are more likely to abandon them. Pregnant teenagers often experience problems during and after childbirth due to social and psychological distress. Abandonment, for some, is an alternative to abortion.
