Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels says their 3-0 DFB- Pokal win at St Pauli had helped restore confidence in their squad ahead of a trip to German champions Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
The Westferlendians, who have taken just a point from their last six league matches and sits 15th in the table, put their league struggles behind them as they cruised past their second-division hosts.
Dortmund- Bundesliga champions in 2012- are already 12 points behind leaders Bayern, but Hummels insisted the Cup win was a “step forward”.
“The second half wasn’t as good as the first one, but it was important to progress,” he said on the club website. “All in all a commanding performance from us. We’ve never had to go through anything like this, it dents your confidence. But we’ve taken a great step forward.
“We are having a great game on Saturday. It’s a great challenge, but if there’s one game to gain confidence, it’s the one against Bayern.”
