Wolfsburg trimmed Bayern Munich’s dominance on resumption of the German league season with a 4-1 win over the runaway leaders.
Pep Guardiola’s men suffered their heaviest league defeat in six years on Friday at the Volkswagen Arena, where a Bas Dost and Kevin de Bruyne brace apiece cut short their lead to eight points while defender Juan Bernat consolation proved insignificant.
The win served as a befitting tribute to Junior Malanda, who died in a car crash earlier this month. A minute’s applause was observed for the Belgium Under-21 international before kickoff.
Bayern were, for the first time since 2012, 2-0 down at half-time as Dost, first opened scoring with the home side’s first chance of the game driving a superb shot past goalkeeper Manuel Neuer after a swift counter-attacking move and then latched on to a loose ball to volley home from the edge of the area.
Maximillion Arnold released De Bruyne in behind the visitors’ defence with an inch-perfect pass and the Dutch midfielder rifled home Wlfsburg’s third after the break.
Bernat pulled one goal back for the hosts with 35 minutes left. But De Bruyne restored Wolfsburg’s 3-goal cushion, again collecting a pass from Arnold; he wrong-footed defender Dante before smashing the ball beyond Neuer.
The defeat- their heaviest in the league since a 5-1 loss at Wolfsburg in 2009- means the German champions have now conceded more goals than in the first half of the ongoing campaign (3).
