Villarreal Set Up Last 4 Tie With Barca in Copa del Rey

Villarreal, Bilbao and Espanyol join Barcelona in Copa del Rey semifinals.

Villarreal will face Barcelona in the penultimate round of the Spanish Copa del Rey after a 2-0 aggregate win over Getafe. Espanyol and Athletic Bilbao complete lineup of last four fixtures, with the first leg scheduled to take place on February 10.

Coming into Thursday’s second leg on the back of a 1-0 lead Gerardo Moreno’s late strike secured a place for the ‘Yellow Submarines’ who are unbeaten in their last 18 matches in all competition- their last defeat coming at the hands of FC Zurich in the Uefa Europa League in November.

Villarreal dominated play at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez and confirmed their passage in the 78th minute when Moreno rounded Jonathan Lopez to slot home.

Elsewehere, Diego Figuera’s 88-minute brilliant goal was too little too late to avert Sevilla’s ouster at the expense of a visiting Espanyol, who were already 3-1 up from last week’s first leg at Cornella El-Prat.

Espanyol almost struck a killer punch when Sergio Garcia’s free-kick came off the bar.

Athletic might be having a nightmare in the league but their Cup form offers array of hope as Aritz Aduriz’s second-half strike saw them edge Malaga 1-0 on aggregate.
