Monaco Force Zenit to a Scoreless Draw

Zenit St Petersburg maintained their unbeaten start to the season as Monaco snatched a point from their trip to the Russian league leaders on Wednesday.

Both clubs, who had won their opening Uefa Champions League games, could not break the deadlock after 90 minutes. The draw means Zenit are unbeaten in 15 games in all competitions this season- 13 of those a win.

Zenit goalkeeper Yuri Lodygin enrolled in the thick of early action at the Petrovski Stadium, fending off Dimitar Berbatov’s close-range shot with his legs.

Nabil Dirar and Lucas Ocampos failed to place the French Ligue 1 visitors ahead as Leonardo Jardim’s men mounted pressure within eight minutes of kick-off.

Hulk charged Andre Villas-Boas’ team forward in the tenth minute with a surging run from his own half, only for captain Danny to fire wide the Brazilian’s assist.

Zenit looked to have settled into the game for the next half-hour, but it was Monaco who threatened to score on 44 minutes when Lodygin tipped over Ocampos’ half volley.

Domenico Criscito combined with Hulk to set up Jose Tondon early into the second-half, but the Venezuelan striker shot straight at Monaco goalkeeper Danijel Subasic.

Rondon then blasted wide another attempt five minutes later following Aleksandr Anyukov’s cross from the near post.

Zenit struggled to get the ball inside the net and Nicolas Lombaerts was next to head Hulk’s corner straight at Subasic.

Yannick Carrasco came up with the best chance of the game in the 73rd minute, but his deflected shot came off the post, leaving both sides to settle for a point apiece.
