Nigerian Leaders Need Prayers, Not Criticism, Says CAN

can_logoThe Borno State chapter of Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, on Wednesday, asked political and religious leaders in the country to have a self-re-examination and live in the fear of God, pointing out that the nation was held in captivity by its leaders.

The message was delivered by Bishop Naga Mohammed at the October 1 Unity Prayer organized by the association to commemorate the nation’s 54th Independence Anniversary.

According to the clergyman, God has freed Nigeria and Nigerians from the bondage of under-development, corruption and endemic poverty but the nation’s leaders have repeatedly held the country back.

Bishop Mohammed in the message titled: “Thus far has the Lord helped us”, said, “God has given us freedom but Devil is usually out to snatch it from us through our actions and that of most of our leaders. Nigeria got independence from the British colonial masters but we are not free from poverty and many problems”.

While warning Nigerians to be wary of manoeuvre from people he called agents of the Devil, the Bishop asked Nigerian leaders to purge themselves of selfish interest and seek truth so that the nation can be set free. He quoted the gospel according to John chapter 8 verse 32 – ‘And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free’ – to buttress his point.

Mohammed, who is the bishop of the popular Pentecostal Believer Bible Church (PBBC) in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, said; “The people ought to confess that they have sinned against God”, insisting that “Political leaders in the country need the prayers of the people than the usual criticism”.

He also called for prayers for religious leaders to lead well, stressing that they needed prayers of guidance to say the truth in a nation perverse by corruption, intolerance, injustice and moral decadence even amidst temptation and threats.
