Manchester United 3-0 Hull City
Goals from Chris Smallings, Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie propelled United to victory at home to Aston Villa.
Marcos Rojo returned to United’s starting lineup after dislocating his shoulder at Manchester City while Ashley Young and Juan Mata replaced Luke Shaw and Tyler Blackett.
Hull City brought on James Chester and Mohamed Diame for Tom Huddleston and Gaston Ramirez.
Midfielder Angel Di Maria was withdrawn 14 minutes after kickoff having picked up an injury, paving way for the returning Ander Herrera.
Smalling opened scoring for the home team on 16 minutes, reacting quickest to prod the ball over the line from a rebound of his previous header, with referee Anthony Taylor needing the goal-line technology to draw conclusion. The strike was his third Premier League goal and his second against Hull.
Wayne Rooney doubled the Red Devils lead on 42 minutes with his 178th top-flight goal. The skipper swept home Van Persie’s lay-off from 20 yards.
Van Persie ended his barren run of four games without a goal in the 66th minute; when he blasted in Herrera’s pass from the edge of the visitors’ penalty area- his second league goal in seven matches so far this season.
The win was sufficient to move United back into fourth place.
