The dust raised by last Thursday’s invasion of the National Assembly by the police and other security agencies is yet to settle with a civil society organization, Transition Monitoring Group, TMG, condemning the action.
The Chairman TMG, Zikirullahi Ibrahim, on Thursday, at a World press conference titled “State of the Nation”, said the siege would go down in history as one of the most ignoble attempts to subvert democracy and the principle of separation of powers.
Mr. Ibrahim said those who ordered the ill-advised invasion of the National Assembly should be made to understand that their action was a declaration of war against the Nigerian people.
He said “it’s surprising that anyone with an understanding of the sacredness of this institution would order the kind of shameful assault, including the tear gassing of lawmakers”.
Mr. Ibrahim stated that TMG frowns at “the might is right approach, which has been deployed in apparent pursuit of what looks more like vendetta.
“We are not in doubt that the issue of the defection of the Speaker of the House of Representatives from the ruling party to the opposition is a matter for a court of competent jurisdiction to decide on”, he said.
He added that the police action of November 20 amounts to a patent illegality, a clear case of an institution of the state taking the laws into its own hands and resorting to self-help.
The TMG called to question the credibility of the Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba and his ability to enforce law and order in the 2015 general elections, saying his actions have already betrayed him as a sympathizer of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
