Coach Stephen Keshi will get a new contract despite failing to qualify Nigeria for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, officials have disclosed.
Keshi was named successor to former Super Eagles manager Samson Siasia in 2011 after the latter failed to guide Nigeria to the 2012 Afcon. He led the country to a third Afcon title in South Africa and a fifth World Cup appearance in Brazil, where the reigning African champions failed to advance past the second round.
Since coach Keshi’s Eagles failed to beat the Bafana Bafana at home to progress to the 2015 Afcon finals in Equatorial Guinea, many enthusiasts and pundits have called for his sack or an honourable resignation.
However, Keshi appears set for a new contract according to Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Executive Committee (ExCo) member Emeka Inyama.
“The board has mandated the technical committee to finalise a contract for Keshi as he still remains the coach of Nigeria,” Inyama said.
Keshi’s initial three-year contract ended after the World Cup. The 52-year-old has handled Nigeria without a contract, as negotiations with the football fraternity had been hampered by months-long leadership tussle.
A winless run in four Afcon qualifying matches resulted to his recent dismissal by the NFF ExCo board led by Amaju Pinnick, but was re-instated following the intervention of President Goodluck Jonathan.
