Kano Blast: 92 Killed As Suicide Bombers Blow Themselves Up In Kano Mosque

More than 92 people have been confirmed dead in Friday’s bombing at the Grand Mosque in Kano, AFP reports.

National police spokesman Emmanuel Ojukwu told AFP that two bombers blew themselves up in quick succession, before the gunmen opened fire on those who were trying to escape. About 126 people were also injured.

Friday’s attack came days after the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi urged civilians to take up arms and defend themselves against Islamist sect Boko Haram, as security operatives have not been able to provide adequate protection.

The blasts came after a bomb attack was foiled against a mosque in Maiduguri Borno State, earlier on Friday, just five days after two female suicide bombers killed over 45 people in the city. Police in the state had also four days ago arrested a female would-be suicide bomber, following a bomb scare in the commercial city.

“I am ready to die. But mark you, there are two others at large in the city,” a source, who witnessed the middle-aged woman’s arrest quoted her as saying.

It is however not clear whether due investigations were carried out about her claim, or whether there may be a connection between the alleged two others at large, and the two persons who blew themselves up at the mosque today.
