Oyo State has been granted a $200 million (N35.5 billion) loan by the World Bank, to enable it tackle the challenges posed by flood.
The State government is also supporting the project aimed at being proactive against future disasters, with $20 million (N3.6 billion). This will also make funds available to compensate victims of the flood for the loss of properties in previous disasters, especially the August 2011 flooding in the state.
This was disclosed at a stakeholders meeting held at the House of Chiefs, Secretariat, Ibadan.
The project coordinator of Ibadan Urban Flood Management Project (IUFMP), Dayo Ayorinde, explained that some of the challenges that had made the city prone to flood was the lack of detailed master plan of the city and this project, among other things, was aimed at overcoming that challenge.
“The project is a very big one which is set out to address those infrastructure challenges which came up as a result of the flood disaster in 2011. Another important thing we should stress is that we are not only going to address the challenges, we want to go about it with a prepared plan; the first one is the Ibadan city urban master plan and the Ibadan urban risk flood management and drainage master plan; we want to look at areas that are flood prone,” he said.
